ABSTRACT

Ocular manifestations may precede the diagnosis of chronic ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease. They are rare, and occur between 1.9 and 11.8% of cases, and it is for this reason that often goes unnoticed; however are associated with high morbidity and may even cause blindness. The most frequent ocular manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease are episcleritis, scleritis and uveitis, among others. The eye examination should be performed in all patients with inflammatory bowel disease to detect early these manifestations.
