ABSTRACT

Total body irradiation is a useful tool that has been extensively employed as a part of conditioning regimens previous to bone marrow transplantation. In addition, it has been useful too in several kind of diseases, for example autoimmune diseases. This procedure consists in the irradiation of the whole body with high energy photon fields and frequently it is associated to an intensive chemotherapeutic protocol. However this technique is not free at all of adverse effects which can appear sooner or later. For this reason it is important to watch the evolution of the patients that have been treated with total body irradiation and follow them strictly. Early investigations in the use of helical tomotherapy for total body or selective total marrow irradiation show promise and warrant further study.
