ABSTRACT

Background: Mucocutaneous candidiasis is the most common fungal infection in diabetic patients. The poor diabetic metabolic control and also smoking, have been related to an increase rate in oral candidiasis.
Objective: To establish the frequency of oral candidiasis in patients with diabetes mellitus type 1 and other related factors.
Methods: We performed a descriptive and transversal study in 26 patients. We colected oropharynx samples. To isolate and classify the yeast we used the Sabouraud and CHROMagar cultures.
Results: In 12 patients (45%) we observed yeast colonies in the cultures, they all belong to the Candida gender; eight were C. Albicans, two C. Tropicalis, one C. Famata and one was classified as Candida sp.
Conclusions: The percentage of diabetic patients type I with Candida in the oropharynx is high; the most common type (species) was C. Albicans and it can be associated to concomitant factors such as smoking, poor metabolic control, and the use of dental prothesis.
