ABSTRACT

Background: Actinomyces israelii is a filamentous gram-positive anaerobic bacterium that is ubiquitously present in the body as a commensal in the mouth, gastrointestinal tract and female genital tract. There are literature reports regarding the association between the use of intrauterine devices and the colonization by Actinomyces sp.
Objective: Presentation of one case.
Clinical case: Female patient, 21 years old, intrauterine device carrier was admitted to emergency room due to acute abdominal pain. The patient underwent left hemicolectomy and histological analysis reported colon actinomycosis. Further clinical outcome was satisfactory and the patient was discharged to home without complications.
Conclusion: Colon actinomycosis can mimic pseudotumors and should not be overlooked as a cause of acute abdomen, particularly in patients carrying the intrauterine devices.
