ABSTRACT

Introduction: the study of living and health conditions is a useful tool for the health care sector, particularly the primary care level; however, it faces problems in its implementation due to difficulties in gathering information and to lack of simple tools to characterize the territories on the basis of such conditions.
Objective: to identify the indicators that allow characterizing the provinces according to their living conditions in 2014.
Methods: a theoretical review was made on this topic in which adequate indicators were identified to operationalize the concept "living conditions" in the four dimensions suggested by PL Castellanos. Qualitative and quantitative techniques served to select and validate the submitted indicators; a group of experienced experts on this subject validated the contents and aspects of indicators and the discriminating factorial analysis was used to select the final indicators.
Results: the used algorithm allowed reducing the initial number of 61 indicators to just 13 which comprised the most relevant aspects of the four dimensions of the "living conditions" concept and set the differences among the territories thanks to its high discriminating power; additionally, they were easily taken from reliable secondary sources.
Conclusions: a set of easily obtainable indicators, which are adequate and sufficient from the qualitative and quantitative viewpoints, with high discriminating power in terms of living conditions, were finally identified. They take into account the present realities of the country.
