ABSTRACT

Introduction: urinary tract infection represents one of the most frequent, nonepidemic bacterial infections diagnosed at any age. The correct diagnosis and adequate treatment are fundamental to prevent renal damage.
Objective: to characterize the behavior of the urinary infection and the antimicrobial susceptibility of the most frequently isolated bacterium in urocultural samples.
Methods: retrospective, observational and descriptive study performed at the provincial microbiology laboratory in San Jose de las Lajas, Mayabeque province from May through December, 2012. The registry book of urocultures were checked to obtain the final 86 urocultures with the most significant bacterial isolation from patients diagnosed with urinary infection and admitted to "Leopoldito Martinez" general teaching hospital located in the same municipality and province. Additionally, the antimicrobial susceptibility of the most frequently isolated bacterium was analyzed.
Results: the most frequent isolated uropathogens were Escherichia coli, mainly in females, followed by Proteus. The main causative agent showed over 80 % susceptibility to Nitrofurantoin, amykacin, kanamycin, cefuroxime and cefotaxime. The susceptibility to ceftriaxione was 45.3 %, sulfaprim 18.6 %, ciprofloxacin 31.3 % and ampicillim 10.4%.
Conclusions: The main causative bacteria of infection in the urinary tract is Escherichia coli, so knowing the behavior of this bacterium in different antimicrobial treatments will guide physicians towards empirical antimicrobial treatment, even when the bacteriological confirmation of disease is still pending.
