ABSTRACT

Gastrointestinal bleeding is the loss of blood that can go from the esophagus to the anus. In general, it is considered that any bleeding that comes from a location proximal to the ligament of Treitz, is an upper gastrointestinal bleeding, and gastrointestinal bleeding with an origin distal to the ligament of Treitz, considered lower gastrointestinal bleeding. The causes of bleeding can be divided into non-variceal and variceal, among which the most common are peptic ulcer and secondary to portal hypertension respectively. Corresponds to a frequent cause of hospitalization and emergency service query, so early treatment prevents a number of complications that threaten the patient’s life. The validated prognostic scores based on the severity of bleeding, endoscopes findings and patient comorbidities, predict mortality and have clinical utility. Advances in diagnosis and treatment, endoscope or surgical have improved the prognosis and clinical course of patients with this pathology. The treatment is based on the cardiovascular resuscitation in patients with active or recent bleeding, followed by endoscopic therapy, treatment with inhibitors of proton pump reduces the risk of rebleeding, and emergency surgery is performed in patients where you cannot control the bleeding by endoscopic means.
