ABSTRACT

Autism is a syndrome of neuropsychiatric dysfunction; its presence indicates that there is a disorder in the central nervous system, mainly in the brain. Autistic children have no physical stigmas or signs that announce any disorder. Clinical expressivity is diverse. In order to diagnose this syndrome, the patient must have a disturbed general functioning that makes learning and social adaption difficult. Psychoactive drugs don't cure autism; they are just used to adjust children´s conduct for obtaining better results in their educative activity. Evolution in each patient is also diverse, and different factors have an influence on it such as, age at the moment of diagnosis, stressful life events and family support.
