ABSTRACT

Introduction: history of low birth weight can affect the body mass index in adolescence, and also it can be related to the onset of hypertension in female adolescents.
Objectives: evaluate the influence of low birth weight and age at menarche on blood pressure. Confirm that the age at menarche and body mass index have mediating effect between birth weight and blood pressure levels. Develop a proposal for preventive education strategy in female adolescents in Marianao during 2011-2012.
Methods: 112 adolescents were studied in two junior high schools. The variables measured were weight, height, waist and hip cincunferencias, blood pressure, body mass index, occurrence of menarche as a binary variable, age at menarche, time since that event.
Results: none of the assumptions derived from the literature and from this recent record was confirmed in this work: no association of birth weight with age at menarche, or with blood pressure levels was found. The well-known association of blood pressure levels with waist circumference and body mass index was confirmed.
Conclusions: there are differences between pre and postmenarchal girls concerning systolic blood pressure, no clear relationship between age at menarche and blood pressure, and high positive correlation between age at menarche and birth weight.
