ABSTRACT

Community health is a model medical attention in which the population participates with the purpose of solving the community’s health necessities. Community health promoters are peasants trained to assist in the first level pathologies of their population, with knowledge on their problems and the moral commitment of assisting their community. Objective: The Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Respiratorias together with the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana -Xochimilco in field work with the community of Oventic, Sacam Chen municipality, in Chiapas, proposed to train community health promoters in the detection and treatment of tuberculosis. Material and methods: The program lasted 3 days. Topics on tuberculosis were translated live from Spanish to the “tzotzil” and “tzeltal” languages du-ring the lectures and laboratory experiences. Results: Health promoters obtained 34 sputum samples from coughing patients and prepared smears for bacilloscopies. Conclusions: The present field and laboratory work in charge of the health promoters were adequate and showed that the objective had been reached. Health promoters are a valuable resource to expand the scope of the National Program on Tuberculosis Control.
