ABSTRACT

Pigmented lesions of the oral mucosa are numerous and range from benign conditions such as the oral melanotic macule to malignant ones such as melanoma. Its approach can be complex and overwhelming. The main objective of the present review is to accomplish a detailed and didactic description of the pigmented oral lesions along with a report of our casuistry. Composition of the oral mucosa, the physiopathogenesis of the melanosis, classification, methods for its examination and diagnosis are detailed, and melanocytic inflammatory or idiopathic lesions (physiological pigmentation, smoker’s melanosis, ephelides y oral melanotic macule), melanocytic neoplasms (nevi, melanoma and prognoma), pigmentation by exogenous deposit (tattoo by amalgam, pigmentations by drugs and metals) and endogenous pigmentations (ochronosis and hemochromatosis) are addressed.
