Chronic diarrhea in frequent traveler

ABSTRACT

Background: Chronic diarrhea is defined by the increase in the number of loose or liquid stools, more than three times a day for a period longer than four weeks. It is always a diag­nostic challenge. Clinical case: 28-year-old male patient native of Hiroshima, Japan; bachelor, international business consultant; eating habits altered because of frequent trips between Asian, European and Latin-American countries. With a condition of four months’ evolution, identified by an increased number of greenish liquid stools (5-9/day) in Bristol scale, accompanied by mild to moderate pain colicky on epigastric, mesogastric and right hemiabdomen; a weight loss of two kilograms; multi -treated. He had to be hospitalized for chronic diarrhea in study, establishing the diagnosis of Giardia intestinalis infestation confirmed by ELISA test. Conclusions: With a diagnosis of chronic diarrhea, orderly approach, based on a detailed medical history and an accurate physical examination, the initial identification of the most common causes usually enables the physician to establish the right diagnosis
