ABSTRACT

Background. Battered child syndrome includes a wide spectrum. No organ or system of the body has been spared of physical damage caused by this social phenomenon.
Material, method and results. The purpose of this report is to describe three of 54 patients, who suffered extreme violence by physical abuse. One of them sustained esophageal rupture and pulmonary contusion and had a fatal outcome. Another patient had brain hemorrhage, elbow, femoral and cranial fractures, small bowel rupture and third degree thigh and leg burns. She died. The last one suffered laceration of the colon, retroperitoneal hemorrhage, hepatic rupture, bilateral lung contusion and pancreatitis. This male patient survived.
Conclusions. Extreme battered child syndrome is unusual, but a very severe and often fatal condition.
