ABSTRACT

Ticks (genus Ixodes) are the only vectors reported to date for Lyme disease. Transmission occurs by the introduction, through biting, of the Borrelia burgdorferi spirochete. Prophylactic treatment is indicated when a bite from this particular vector is clearly identified and prevents the serious systemic effects in the body. An Ixodes ricinus (Linnaeus 1758) bite case is reported and the relevant aspects found in the literature are reviewed.
