ABSTRACT

Purpose: To determine the prevalence of corneal graft failure in patients undergoing penetrating keratoplasty, and evaluate the related risk factors. Methods: A descriptive, transversal and retrospective study, of patients undergoing penetrating keratoplasty, who presented corneal graft failure, from June 2012 to December 2014, was performed. Results: 1,104 corneal transplants were performed during this period, of which 44 had graft failure. The prevalence of graft failure was 3.8%. With regard to the receptor associated variables, 47.7% of recipients were older than 60, and 29.5% were patients between 40 and 60 years old. The distribution of cases of failure to function preoperative diagnosis was 25% pseudophakic bullous keratopathy, followed by herpetic keratitis (20.5%) and keratoconus (13.6%). The average age of the donor was 31.4 years, and the prevalent cause of death was homicide (75%). All rescued corneas were preserved with Eusol. Conclusions: The prevalence of corneal graft failure in the transplant population is 3.8%. This study found that the most important risk factors for graft failure were pseudophakic bullous keratopathy, post-herpetic keratitis and keratoconus.
