ABSTRACT

Introduction: Laparoscopic splenectomy in benign hematological illnesses is the most frequent laparoscopic surgery on solid organs. Methods: The surgical results from patients who underwent laparoscopic splenectomy in the Medical Surgical Research Center are presented here. The series accounted for four male patients whose average age was 30 years (25 years to 47 years). Results: The surgical average time was about 132 min (45 min to 210 min). Platelet transfusion was not necessary for any of the patients in the study. No patient had accessory spleen. Conversion to open surgery was not needed. There were no postoperative complications. There was no mortality in this series. The postoperative hospitalization covered an average of 2,5 days (2 to 4 days). Conclusions: Laparoscopic splenectomy is a safe alternative for patients with benign hematological illnesses.
