Effectiveness of educational intervention in the knowledge of the diabetic patient about self-care

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a non-transmissible disease of chronic evolution with a repercussion in Cuba mobility and mortality. The nursing activity with the ambulatory patient is fundamental for improving the quality of life.
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of an educational intervention program in the knowledge of the diabetic patient about self-care.
Methodology: Quasi-experimental study of educational intervention with 36 diabetic patients from four family doctor and nurse offices belonging to Jose Marti Teaching Polyclinic of Gibara, during the year 2013. The information was obtained by applying, before and after the intervention, a questionnaire with social-demographic and knowledge variables about diabetes. The intervention was validated by experts' criteria. The results were processes calculating media, percentages. To identify significant differences among the results obtained before and after the intervention, the difference in proportion hypothesis test was applied.
Results: The patients' average age was 53.2 years, the sources that provided the patients with greater quantity of information were: the family (61.11%), the doctor and the nurse (52.77 %). With the intervention, 100.00 % of the patients increased their knowledge on diabetes. The importance of physical activity and the feet care, knowledge about the responsibility of care improved in 44.44% - 100.0%.
Conclusions: The educational intervention applied was effective because it modified the knowledge about the disease, the care and self-care by the studied diabetic patients.
