ABSTRACT

Introduction: With the national program of responsible maternity and paternity, the women and the family receive information about pregnancy and delivery. The method provides knowledge about what happens and what will happen, supporting and stimulating them in order to avoid negative psychological influences.
Objective: To evaluate the effects of applying the national program of responsible maternity and paternity regarding the level of knowledge of the pregnant women.
Methods: Descriptive, longitudinal, prospective study in Luis Enrique de la Paz Reina Polyclinic of Yara Municipality, Granma Province, in 2011, with a simple group of 150 pregnant women who received the program of responsible maternity and paternity. A survey was conducted on them and after the program was applied, the level of knowledge was evaluated as adequate or non-adequate. Absolute frequencies and the percentage were used as summarizing measures for qualitative variables; for qualitative ones the arithmetic measure was used.
Results: The average age was 28.6 years; 62 % has passed senior high school; housewives predominated (82 [54.66 %]); the level of knowledge of the pregnant women increased with the program regarding all the activities, in the exercises of communication with the coming baby over 66.0 and in psychoprophylaxis, nutrition and pregnancy en over 21.33.
Conclusions: The application of the national program of responsible maternity and paternity improved the level of knowledge of the pregnant women, psychoprophylaxis, nutrition and pregnancy, breastfeeding and exercises of communication with the coming baby were the main areas of knowledge improved.
