ABSTRACT

Depression has been a constant presence throughout the history of humanity, and in recent decades has experienced a notable increment. Research on this disorder is insufficient in Cuba. A cross-sectional, analytical, case-control study was conducted using a sample of 100 subjects, from November 2011 to July 2012, with the aim of determining knowledge and attitudes towards depression, predictive diagnosis and genetic research in patients, relatives at risk, professionals and medical students at the Julio Grave de Peralta Polyclinic from the Holguin municipality. A questionnaire was applied to the sample under informed consent. Quantitative variables were evaluated using the Kolmogorov-Smirnoff test. The ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to determine statistically significant differences in the behavior of a continuous variable between more than two groups, while the Scheffe “a posteriori” model was used to evaluate a continuous variable between different sample size groups. The McNemar statistic was used to analyze the perception of knowledge. No statistically significant differences between groups regarding knowledge of depression were identified. Specialists and students showed a more positive attitude towards genetic testing and genetic counseling. A strategy of genetic counseling for depression was designed from a preventive perspective, based on the results of the study.
