Attitudes toward depression, predictive diagnosis and genetic research in individuals from Pinar del Rio

ABSTRACT

Depression is a mood involvement characterized by negative feelings such as sadness, disappointment, frustration, hopelessness, worthlessness and unhappiness; it is a serious health problem and is the leading cause of disability due to mental illness. In this research an analytic non-experimental cross-sectional study was made, with cases and controls, in the period from November 2011 to October 2012, with the aim of identifying attitudes toward depression, predictive studies and genetic research in individuals with the disease, their relatives, students and professionals and then design a preventive strategy of genetic counseling for depression in Pinar del Río city. The sample consisted of 100 individuals; 30 patients, a healthy first degree relative for each of them, 20 medical students and health professionals respectively. A questionnaire validated in Cuba and Denmark was applied under informed consent. Students and professionals showed a greater knowledge of depression, while patients and professionals had more knowledge of genetic research. Professionals had the best attitude towards genetic, predictive and prenatal studies. A strategy for genetic counseling was designed, according to clinical and sociodemographic characteristics of interviewees and to be applied in this region.
