ABSTRACT

Objective: Show the results of the initial experience of the video assisted thoracic surgery procedures in our hospital. Setting: Regional Zone Hospital No. 1, Social Security Mexican Institute of Cuernavaca, Morelos. Design: Longitudinal, prospective study. Patients and methods: This study includes 18 patients with endoscopic surgical procedures type VATS, from November 1999 to September 2001. It was analyzed the following variables: sex, age, preoperative diagnosis, effected procedure, surgical time, usage of drainage, postoperative pain evaluation, traditional method conversion, transoperative and postsurgical complications, hospitalization time, histopathologic study and mortality. Results: Male sex predominance (77.77%) in comparison to female sex (23.33%). The average age was of 48.5 years old. The average of hospitalization time was of 3.4 days. There was conversion in one case by bronchopleural fistula complication. Conclusions: We conclude that this type approaches are highly safe and reproducible in our unity, the diagnosis is highly sensible and effective in the presence of a non easily identifiable pathology by the conventional ways. It has demonstrated efficacy and a minimum morbility index in the therapeutic approach.
