ABSTRACT

Background: The endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) opened a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities for the biliopancreatic pathology, however it has become in the endoscopic technique with the biggest morbi-mortality. Knowing the complications’ risk factors can be used to recognize the high risk patients to develop complications. Objective: Identify the risk factors related to the complications. Material and methods: Since January 2014 to February 2015, 70 patients were submitted to ERCP. The complications and variables were determined. We used a bivariated analysis and the multiple logistic regression model to determining association. Results: The risk factors were: age under 60 years [OR 4.1, CI 95% 0.9-20; p = 0.043]; cannulation in the pancreatic duct [OR 5.6 CI 95% 3.3-9.4; p = 0.018]; diagnostic ERCP [OR 2.2 CI 95% 1.7-2.9; p = 0.034]; difficult to cannulate patients [OR 3.4 CI 95% 3.1-37 p = 0.05]; sphincterotomy [OR 8.6 CI 95% 4.4-16; p = 0.05] and biopsy [OR 13.8 CI 95% 5.9-32; p = 0.006]. Conclusion: Knowing the risk factors can contribute to identify the patients with high risk to develop complications; however a proper selection to the patient will help to diminish the procedure complications.
