ABSTRACT

Hypertensive crisis are defined as an elevation of blood pressure above a limit figure that has been previously established. Around the world different values of blood pressure are used to define a crisis, yet there seems to be a consensus on the management of such events. In the context of a hypertensive urgency, oral antihypertensive are of choice (are considered the first line treatment), while hypertensive emergencies must receive IV treatment and close monitoring. Also, recommendations have been established regarding the appropriate rate at which blood pressure (BP) should be reduced. New drugs are being tested for an efficient reduction of BP, at the cost of minimal side effects.
