ABSTRACT

An analysis was performed of the significance of Harold Borko's paper Information Science: what is it?, which is considered to be a groundbreaking text in the field of information science. A detailed analysis was made of the political, social, scientific and professional context giving rise to the emergence of information science, as well as the initial postulates of this area of knowledge, based on examination of a number of variables influencing this process. The analysis was based on bibliographic research. Identification was made of the characteristics and purposes of the text in its temporal and spatial context, as well as its main limitations and its present currency in the field of information. A list is provided of the bibliographic references supporting the analysis.
