ABSTRACT

Cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality within the group of Non Transmittable Chronic Diseases around the world, so it is enough concern for national health systems. In Costa Rica, in the last four decades, the diseases associated with malignant tumors, have been increasing and occupy the second place in the rate of mortality, behind cardiovascular disease, which have been increased approximately 20% in the last decade8. However, the general indicators of development indicate that Costa Rica does not escape profiles and epidemiological characteristics of behavior of the diseases that cause more deaths in the world. Notwithstanding the foregoing, healthy lifestyles education must be strengthened to prevent certain cancer risk factors. This article, provides the reader the possibility to inform themselves about the behavior of cancer in Costa Rica, which has important variations across long periods of time. It is based on basic statistical data for each of the main types of cancer and presents the main types of malignant tumors in Costa Rica.
