ABSTRACT

Introduction: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is considered the gold standard for the treatment of gallstones. This method is not exempt of complications that could cause a conversion to open surgery. Objective: To determine the frequency of conversion in laparoscopic cholecystectomy and present the results obtained in the Surgery Department of the University Hospital of Saltillo. Material and methods: An observational, retrospective and descriptive study took place from January 2012 through December 2015, where 522 patients underwent a laparoscopic cholecystectomy made by surgical residents; we determined the causes of conversion. Results: Of the 522 patients, 30 went through a conversion (5.75%); in these cases, anatomic difficulty was the main cause (36.7%), followed by obstruction of the common bile duct (26.7%), and injury of the bile duct (6.7%). There was no mortality in the period of study. Conclusions: Our frequency of conversion to open surgery for cholecystectomy (5.75%), and the incidence of injury of the bile duct (0.3%) are in acceptable ranges, comparable to those described in the literature.
