ABSTRACT

In this historical synthesis of endoscopic surgery we review the contributions of events and personalities which led to its current state, starting with the ancestral interest in looking into the corporal cavities through natural orifices and small incisions, the invention of the endoscope and the videoendoscopic integration. In recognition of those pioneer surgeons that preceded us and whose contributions have served us to accomplish extremely complex endoscopic surgeries today, we included a personal narration of the surgeon that performed the first laparoscopic cholecystectomy in México and another of the founder president of the Mexican Association of Endoscopic Surgery. The revolution promoted by this «new» approach, thanks to the inventive and critical thinking of many surgeons and the medical industry worldwide, has disseminated to almost all surgical subspecialties in such way that surely our patients will benefit from another set of surgical advances in the mid- and long-term future.
