ABSTRACT

Background: the analysis of the health situation is a methodological tool for the diagnosis and analysis of the population's health situation of certain territorial space in a certain period. Its implementation at the nosocomial level in the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security contributes to the development of the managing activities of the directorial staff in these institutions.
Aim: to propose a methodology for carrying out the analysis of the health situation in the hospitals of the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security.
Materials and Methods: it was carried out a documental review of the existent methodological propositions for carrying out the health situation analysis at the nosocomial level and of the regulatory documents of the Ministry of Public Health of Ecuador. There they were determined the thematic directions and indicators to include in the health situation analysis at the nosocomial level for the institutions of the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security.
Outcomes: the proposed health situation analysis at the hospital level was structured in 11 thematic directions, a paragraph of bibliographic references and other annexes. In each of the thematic directions, there they were proposed the indicators allowing their temporal evaluation and the differentiation according to the kind of insurance.
Conclusions: the application of the proposed methodology for carrying out the health situation analysis at the hospital level contributes to identifying problems, necessities and priorities in the hospitals, and also to the execution of appropriated programs for improving the health of the affiliated persons; all of this raises the institutional managing capacity in correspondence with the mission and vision of the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security.
