ABSTRACT

Background: the scientific potential of a territory constitutes, no doubt, the most valuable possession when it´s thought of the socioeconomic development of the country. To boost its development demands determination, perseverance and resources.
Objective: to describe the current state and the perspectives of the process of obtaining scientific ranks in Villa Clara in the period from 2011 to 2015.
Methods: it was carried out a descriptive, longitudinal and prospective study in Villa Clara; the study population comprised 125 ranked researchers in the province. Methods of the theoretical level were used, and among the empiric ones: the documental analysis of the annual reports of the Directorate of Science and Technique of the University of Medical Sciences.
Results: most of the researchers have the researching rank of assistant researcher and there is prevalence of the feminine sex. In science, technology and innovation entities a great number of these professionals are registered. Most of them are medical doctors with the associate and full researching rank. The training, advice and control actions are assumed as the strengths to continue reaching satisfactory results in this process.
Conclusions: in the province it is annually increased the number of ranked professionals as researchers, but it is even insufficient if it´s kept in mind the potential of professionals that complete the requirements to obtain these scientific ranks.
