ABSTRACT

Introduction: dengue is an infectious disease caused by the dengue virus consisting of four serotypes. In Ecuador about 70% of the land area has the favorable environmental conditions for breeding of Aedes aegypti vector transmitting the virus.
Objective: to describe the treatment received by patients hospitalized with dengue in a basic hospital.
Methods: a retrospective observational, descriptive study, based on medical records of hospitalized patients diagnosed with dengue in Internal Medicine Basic Hospital, Jipijapa (Manabi-Ecuador) during November 2010 - April 2012 was done.
Results: the study included 36 adult patients, 21 males (58.3%) and 15 women (41.7%). Of the total group, 16 patients corresponding to 44.44% (CI 27.94% - 61.90%) received only paracetamol, 17 patients corresponding to 47.22% (CI 30.41% - 64.51%) received a combination of metamizol and paracetamol. The remaining three patients received other combinations. The four patients who had classic dengue with hemorrhagic manifestations (DMH) belong to the group who received paracetamol and metamizol corresponding to 23.53% of that combination and 11.11% of all patients studied and statistically significant p = 0 04.
Conclusions: the authors concluded that due to the limited information published, there are not enough studies regarding the use of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Agents in patients with dengue and the few who have made the results are not consistent.
