Key words:

black hairy tongue, filiform papillae.

ABSTRACT

Black hairy tongue is a commonly and harmless condition secondary to a defective desquamation of the filiform papillae. These papillae, which are longer than normal, can easily trap and be strained by tobacco, food, bacteria and yeast. In severe cases, the lenght of these papillae can become quite long, giving a hair-like appaerance. Although black hairy tongue may look alarming, doesn’t cause any health problem and is usually painless. The aim of this paper is to report a case of black hairy tongue and review current concepts of this interesting clinical entity.
