ABSTRACT

Introduction: attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is one of the main neuropsychiatric disorders having its onset during the childhood and it is often associated with other comorbidity disorders. Epilepsy is within them.
Objective: to characterize from the neuropsychiatric the point of view the attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity in children with epilepsy.
Method: an applied research, development, descriptive and cross sectional research was carried out in school-aged epileptic children from 6 to 11 years old, in Pinar del Rio municipality, during the period of investigation. The target group included (U = 147) epileptic children who attended to consultation. The sample included those who were diagnosed with this disease (n = 54), according to the intentional non-probabilistic sampling, taking into account the inclusion and exclusion criteria. A family-patient interview was conducted where the psychiatric-social history and a psychiatric examination were performed; the diagnosis was based on in the DSM IV. The test of attention, Conners questionnaire of behavior for parents, was applied, as well. The statistical data processing was performed using the ratio test versus a hypothetical value and the comparison test of two proportions of independent groups.
Results: the disorder associated with epilepsy predominated in males; having perinatal medical history, this group was the most frequent. They subtype attention deficit / hyperactivity and inattentive symptomatic and focal epilepsies were the most frequent signs of cortical frontal focal irritation predominated.
Conclusions: the early diagnosis and management of these children helps preventing cognitive, emotional and behavioral complications.
