ABSTRACT

Objetive: To identify the length of the long process of the incus to the stapes footplate in patients with otosclerosis.
Material and Method: A study was made in which 40 ears of patients with otosclerosis diagnosed on the basis of their clinical history and their audiogram were included. All patients had high-resolution computed tomography before stapedectomy. The measurement from the long process of the incus to the stapes footplate was made in coronal view. Intraoperative measurement of distance between the stapes footplate and the long process of the incus of the middle ear were made by the surgeon. The prosthesis generally used was the flouroplastic.
Results: Length of the prosthesis was between 3.5 and 4.75 mm. The average of measurement from the long process of the incus to the stapes footplate was 4 mm. The length of the prosthesis by tomography was 4 mm vs 4.13 mm introperative, without statistical difference.
Conclusion: Measurement of the length of the piston in our study were 4 mm. This distance is important for estimating the proper prosthesis length in stapedotomy for treating otosclerosis in our population.
