ABSTRACT

Transfusion of blood and blood components require a constant and critical clinical evaluation taking into account its risk and the high proportion of indicated transfusions. A study was carried out at «Dr. Celestino Hernández Robau» University Hospital from January to December, 2014 in order to know the use of blood and blood components and do its evaluation. A number of 2703 patients received 5986 transfusions; more than half of these transfusions corresponded to the Oncology Service. The most used component was erythrocyte concentrate, followed by, platelet concentrate and antihemophilic plasma. Incomplete and incorrect indications were detected, transfusions were based more on results than clinical manifestations, as well as, medical opinion was not always reflected in patient’s medical record.
