ABSTRACT

Introduction: blood transfusions can save or sustain a life; however, they are a transient treatment and should be considered as a tissue transplant with short and self-limiting life.
Objective: to assess the use of the indication of blood and its components at "Dr. León Cuervo Rubio" Hospital into the context of an adequate hemosurveillance.
Method: a descriptive, cross-sectional and retrospective study was carried out in which the requests for transfusion services were appraised, reviewing the monthly reports of the Hospital Transfusion Committee and the registry of transfusion adverse reactions due to blood components in each of the services during the year 2015.
Results: in the year 2015 there was a decrease in the number of transfused patients compared to 2014, despite having a higher number of admissions; 68.3% of transfused patients were old people and ages from 61 to 70. The erythrocyte concentration was the most used component and Internal Medicine service had more transfused patients. The reports of adverse reactions were higher in 2015; febrile non-hemolytictransfusion reactionwas more frequent.
Conclusions: efforts should be addressed towards the proper use of blood components, assessing the current trend to senescence and onco-hematological diseases. It is necessary to assess the risks and benefits of transfusions using a strict hemosurveillance system in hospitals to monitor and to report adverse reactions.
