ABSTRACT

This research is devoted to understanding the place that had the Temperance Societies in defense against alcohol consumption in Mexico since the late nineteenth century to the second decade of the twentieth century. Scientists and religious claimed that the country was going through a serious problem to the problem of alcoholism. However, it appears that evangelical groups were the first communities to develop prevention and intervention tactics against this phenomenon, believed, negatively impacted the social body as well as being a distant way of God. Such movement was, there is no doubt, the most systematic hitherto lived this country. For this investigation we have addressed two main themes. The first deals with the imaginary that members of such societies deployed around Temperance; the second explains the arrival and development of them. Finally, to achieve our purpose we turn to the analysis of hemerográficas typical of the era and studied literature.
