ABSTRACT

The immediate postoperative thyroidectomy is a moment of vital importance, as there are complications such as cervical postoperative hematoma that can compromise the patient’s life. Bleeding post thyroidectomy causes compression of the trachea, acute obstruction of the airway and suffocation, in the early postoperative period, within the first 12 hours, when most hematoma with vital danger becomes clinically apparent. Immediate action requires opening of the wound and drainage of hematoma, and urgent measures for the maintenance of an open airway. It presents a case of a suffocating cervical hematoma occurs after total thyroidectomy with benign thyroid pathology and anesthetic management to keep an open airway.
