Giant hepatic cyst, laparoscopic approach. A database review

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Simple cysts are generally seen in less than 5% of the general population. These are present mainly in patients 40 years of age or older, and they reach a giant size almost exclusively in those patients older than 50 years. Only 15% of such cysts are symptomatic. Liver cysts are the main clinical finding in polycystic disease of the liver and the most frequent extra-renal manifestation of the autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease. Material and methods: An electronic search was made in the platforms of PubMed, Medline, Central, Embase, Bandolier and Cochrane Central Database for articles published from January 2000 to November 2016. The following keywords were used: giant, hepatic, cyst, liver, treatment, management, diagnosis and laparoscopic. A thorough analysis was made of all the articles found and the review was carried out with emphasis on evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of giant liver cysts. Conclusion: In all of the articles reviewed, laparoscopic fenestration and deroofing are currently the methods of treatment. We can assure that laparoscopy should be the first choice of treatment because it provides safety and low rates of recurrence, in addition to excellent postoperative pain control and low morbidity and mortality. The choice of another method of treatment will depend on each case.
