ABSTRACT

Alzheimer Disease (AD) and Oxidative Stress (OS) are two concepts intimately related in a cause-effect relationship, the recent data of this relationship are reviewed in this article. The different diagnostic methods are analyzed, emphasizing the non-invasive procedures, and tose that are determinant to establish a differential diagnosis. The natural history of the illness at its different stages is described. In the etiology and pathogenesis, the genetic factors are analyzed, mainly the chromosome 19 apolipoprotein E gene. About OS, and the AD lesions, findings of our research team are described, like demented aged people have less superoxide dismuthase activity than the controls, and some research lines are proposed. Finally, some considerations on therapeutics are made.
