Key words:

Hypothyroidism and pregnancy, complications in early pregnancy, hypothyroidism in first trimester, thyroxin, neurodevelopment, and placenta hormone transport.

ABSTRACT

Objetive: To review the most recent literature and determine if major changes in pregnancy and fetal development, generated by maternal hypothyroidism can be avoided with early diagnosis, if an early screening test is useful and if hormone replacement therapy is beneficial.
Conclusions: It is sufficiently demonstrated the importance of thyroid hormone throughout pregnancy; events that are generated from the beginning are crucial to define complications and abnormalities in the fetus and pregnancy. Today, clinical suspicion and tests available for diagnosis are inadequate and not very accurate. New technologies need to be accessible and less complicated and more studies are needed to determine whether hormone replacement therapeutic intervention (levothyroxine) makes a difference and prevent complications in fetal, neonatal and pregnancy health development.
