ABSTRACT

Introduction: Latex allergy remains a significant problem in children with certain risk factors such as early and multiple surgical interventions as well as atopy. The clinical profile of mexican children has not been described. Objectives: To describe clinical features of paediatric patients with latex allergy diagnosed at the National Institute of Pediatrics, Mexico City. Material and methods: This is a retrospective, transversal, observational and descriptive. Results: We included 26 paediatric patients (6 to 18 years old) with latex allergy diagnosis confirmed by positive skin prick testing and/or latex-specific serum immunoglobulin E › 0.35 KUI/L. We found a gender predominance (male 67%, female 33%). Most of the children had a congenital disease (71%). All of the children (100%) had a previous history of surgical intervetion and most of these were performed within the first twelfe months of age (67%). Most of the patients had been exposed to at least one surgical procedure (80%). Most allergic reactions were mild to moderate (81%). There were 3 cases of anaphylaxis and no fatalities were reported. Most patients had history of atopy and allergic disease (67%). Conclusions: We described the clinical features and relevant medical history of peadiatric patients with latex allergy.
