ABSTRACT

Introduction: After the 1959 revolutionary triumph, Fidel's thinking has been the force directing the development of Cuban medical education and the training of human resources in health, as a guarantee to meet the health needs of the Cuban population and place it at the world-wide level. Objective: To analyze the role of Fidel's thinking and its interrelation with the progressive development of medical education and its human capital in the Cuban national health system. Methods: A historical-cultural qualitative study was performed about Fidel's thinking on entering medical education, for which theoretical methods were used to carry out the analysis and synthesizing of 12 speeches and interventions made between 1959 and 2006, as well as other documents that were research object. As an empirical method, we used a nominal group of experts from the academic committee of the Master in Medical Education of the National School of Public Health, whose results were presented for assessment in a plenary session of the Council of Rectors and Deans of Higher Medical Education Centers (CEMS). Results: We describe Fidel's statements selected from the 12 speeches regarding the entry to medical education, as well as the basic ideas they are related with. We formed with them the integrative idea was and established the actions deemed to be developed to guarantee the fulfillment of the purpose of the Comandante en Jefe. Conclusions: This study made it possible to verify how, in the studied period, Fidel's thinking regarding the need to guarantee the quality of entry to higher medical education contributed decisively to the qualitative leap that health professionals had during their progressive development.
