The pediatric surgeon in the Emergency Room A necessity

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The efforts of a little group of pediatric surgeons with genuine interest in the management of trauma, are not sufficient acknowledgement in many hospitals and emergency groups.
Material and Methods: This is a one year prospective comparative study reviewing 75 hospitals in Puebla city. We analyzed number of pediatric patients for year, if the hospital have a Triage area, Shock Room, numbers of stretchers for second and third priority, medicine doctors in urgencies and certificate pediatric surgeon with courses of ATLS, PHTLS, ACLS, PALS and training and experience on trauma.
Results:
Of 75 hospitals, only 14 have Emergency Room, of them only 9 have equipment and material to attend trauma , but exclusively 3, have pediatric surgeon . In this year only one hospital attend 135 pediatric patients.
Conclusion: Is convenient to encourage to pediatric surgeons on management of trauma, their future depends on the modification of university curricula and programs of hospital training in the making of new pediatric surgeons. As Society and Board we will spend time, talent and resources for to do grow our specialty in this formidable field of the Surgery.
