ABSTRACT

The term optic neuritis refers to an inflammatory process, usually idiopathic, that leads to the demyelination of the optic nerve. Optic neuritis is rare in children, and it has important clinical differences with respect to that occurring in adulthood, especially regarding prognosis. We present the case of a 9-year-old male, with a 6-month history of seizures, decreased visual acuity, bilateral eye pain, holocranial headache, and gait difficulty linked to poor visual acuity. Bilateral optic neuritis was diagnosed. An intracranial tumor was found in the non-enhanced MRI, a. Excision of the intracranial tumor was performed and histopathological analysis revealed a central neurocytoma grade I under the WHO classification. Surgical management with total resection is currently the first-line treatment of the central neurocytoma, which often has an excellent prognosis and minimizes the chances of recurrence.
