Angioid streaks: case report

ABSTRACT

Angioid streaks are irregular linear ruptures of the Bruch membrane which extend radially from the optic disc and surround it in a concentric formation. They are associated with atrophic degeneration of the pigment epithelium of the retina and rupture or absence of the choriocapilaris. Visual function is compromised by the development of choroid neovascularization, choroid rupture and invasion of streaks into the foveal region. Bruch membrane's resistance is weakened in patients with angioid streaks because it has suffered changes in its ultrastructure, becoming vulnerable to ocular trauma which can perpetuate changes in eye fund and hemorrhages. It is suggested that an early diagnosis is established, avoidance of high risk activities and the use of ocular protection.
