ABSTRACT

Today, due to technological and scientific advances in medicine, life expectancy has increased and, in many cases, improvements in the health conditions of people offer an illusion when it comes to the dying process and the death when there is nothing that can avoid it. This hopeful illusion poses dilemmas that require attention when it comes to prolonging the patient's life. To this end, there are currently professionals with a Thanatological approach that are responsible for providing assistance in the grieving process, death or any other type of significant loss. The fundamental task of these professionals is: the accompaniment and mediation between the terminal patient, the relatives and the health personnel. Seeking that the patient be treated with dignity and seeking his right of autonomy with ethical principles until the last moment of his life. To do this, these professionals must know the basics and rights of the terminal patient and protect them in an active intermediation with the health and family team.
