ABSTRACT

Osteochondromas are the most frequent benign bone tumours, nevertheless, their subungual location is uncommon. They tend to occur more frequently in adolescents and young adults and are characterized as small rounded neoplasms that project beyond the free edge of the nail, causing nail dystrophy and onycholysis. Initial diagnostic approach can be supported by image studies like radiography or ultrasonography, however, definitive diagnosis is confirmed with histopathological studies showing a superficial hyaline cartilage layer with central enchondral ossification and trabecular bone. Surgical procedures such as removal of the entire lesion with subsequent curettage of the bone to avoid recurrences are mandatory. In this series, we report five cases, in both sexes, four children and one adult female, all confirmed by histopathologic studies and successful surgical treatment.
