Psycho-emotional disorders in adolescents with obesity

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Multiple interventions are currently being made in childhood obesity, but they have not been enough. It has been demonstrated that pediatric patients with obesity present multiple psychoemotional alterations that impact on the attachment of a multidisciplinary management. Objective: To describe the frequency and type of psychoemotional alterations in a group of adolescents with obesity. Material and methods: Adolescents with obesity who attended the external consultation of pediatrics were included. They were performed complete somatometry and evaluation by the Psychology Service, where the family Apgar instrument and FACES IV were used to assess family functionality. Results: A total of 35 adolescents with obesity were included. All patients presented family dysfunction and some a psychology disorder, being the most frequent (57.1%) the adaptation disorder. In 31.4% of cases, primary caregivers were people other than parents. In 31.4% of cases it was identified that a rigid or overprotective family dynamics provoked bad practices in feeding habits. Conclusions: Family dysfunction and psychoemotional disorders were present in all adolescents with obesity. For the management of childhood obesity, psychological support is of paramount importance.
