ABSTRACT

Fifty percent of children and adolescents with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis meet the criteria for anxious and affective disorders. The multidisciplinary health team should train family groups on the control of the disease, as well as providing them with effective mechanisms to deal with the psychosocial problems associated with this pathology. Objective: to reflect, based on a psychosocial approach, on some of the psychosocial complications of pediatric patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Development: The quality of life of adolescents affected by juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is attached, to a large extent, their own psychosocial strategies to assimilate the suffering of a chronic disorder, as well as its consequences. In addition to assimilating the presence of a medical disorder, patients in general face a set of psychosocial challenges. A multidisciplinary team of pediatricians, rheumatologists, social workers and psychologists can play a central role in the conception of methodological tactics in order to provide patients and their families with effective mechanisms for the adaptation process in order to face their new condition. Conclusions: Multidisciplinary health teams should aim to provide this type of psychosocial assistance to patients and their families, regarding the development of mechanisms to address the physical, mental, emotional and social challenges related to this disease. Much remains to be done in the field of health psychology, and in particular regarding the health behaviors of adolescents of different genres, facing the challenge of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, in order to suggest the development of focused intervention programs in their personal strengths. On the other hand, it is necessary the conceptual and methodological integration of factors being analyzed independently, in order to improve health related quality of life at this stage of development.
