Psychological management of patients with electroconvulsive treatment

ABSTRACT

A descriptive study was carried out on the psychological management of family members who adopt negative attitudes towards electroconvulsive treatment in patients from Crisis at the Intervention Unit of the Guantánamo Psychiatric Hospital in January and December 2014. The sample consisted of 40 relatives. For the primary data were used techniques such as: observation, interview, survey and dynamic groups for psychological management. A low percentage of the family members initially accepted electroconvulsive treatment. The majority of the patients are of urban origin, the average level of education predominated 25% of the relatives were mothers and daughters taking into account the kinship, the majority of the relatives lived with the patients; The mechanisms used by these were avoidance, evasive distraction, denial, religiosity and magical or mystical hope, predominance avoidance with 60%, at the end of the study after the psychological management predominated the family who accepted the electroconvulsive treatment.
